Meet our founder - Colleen Morgan

Colleen grew up in the Pacific Northwest. She was only a few weeks old when she first went camping which ignited her early love of nature. Many camping and fishing trips with family and friends over the years deepened her connection to and gratitude for our earth’s bounty.

She  has had the good fortune to work on environmental issues throughout her professional career and in her community service activities.  In the first part of her career, she was a practicing lawyer. She represented private sector and municipal clients to achieve transactional, regulatory, and litigation goals on environmental, land use, transportation, and energy matters (e.g., utilize eminent domain laws to acquire property for rural electric utility, reduce regulatory burdens to tank truck carriers under Clean Air Act, minimize settlement contributions of potentially responsible parties to remediate Superfund sites).

Colleen has also worked for more than 20 years in the federal government contracting space, primarily providing policy, communications, training, and information technology support to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency programs. She was part of the pioneering efforts to launch the current community sustainability movement—supporting EPA’s Brownfields Program and EPA's Smart Growth program for many years.

Colleen leveraged this knowledge base and skill set to help organizations to optimize their sustainability footprint, including being SRA International’s first Corporate Sustainability Director and as a consultant to EPA’s Climate Leaders program and other federal agency’s sustainability mandates under federal laws and Executive Orders (e.g., 12898, 13423, 13415, 13693).

Based on these experiences, Colleen sees organizational environmental stewardship first and foremost as an opportunity—to become more efficient, to attract/retain great employees, and to create innovative practices that provide a competitive edge (for for-profit organizations) or better fulfill the mission (for non-profit and public organizations). Of course, as an attorney, she also appreciates the value in legal, regulatory, and contractual compliance.  Like many veteran sustainability professionals, she views organizational sustainability as a journey along a green continuum.  She looks forward to helping your organization embrace a deeper shade of green.

Colleen holds a Juris Doctorate from Georgetown University Law Center, a Master of Science from The Johns Hopkins University, and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Portland.  She splits her time between her hometown of Portland, Oregon and her adopted town of Arlington, Virginia in the greater Washington, DC metropolitan area.
